Gardens designed using principles of feng shui also use the chinese 5 five element theory in which water, fire, earth, metal and wood are important components to balance the energies within the landscape and garden areas.

Feng Shui applies to not only the interior of the house, but the way the house sits on the lot, its relationship to the street, the topography of the land and the elements that make up the landscaping.
As Chi energy ebbs and flows around a house, it is greatly influenced by how well the architecture is sensitive to the site and the landscape elements around it.
The front entrance of a house is the “mouth of Chi” and represents our relationship with society also informally known as the "curb appeal". Entrances, front doors and pathways should be inviting and welcoming to attract positive Chi.

Sacred Gardens have a Spiritual component that can be accessed by anyone - they can also renew your Soul. Looking at the benefits of a garden in this way makes them Sacred spaces. Conventional gardens are often used strictly as functional, yet aesthetic creations, but can lack that certain symbolic meaning that makes them so special.

A meditation garden can have different meanings for different people. When you think of a meditation garden, do you think of a Zen type Japanese garden with raked gravel and an island of stones? Do you envision a secluded, private retreat surrounded by lush tropical growth as in a rainforest? Or perhaps you see an area in a traditional yard that has been designated for the purpose of meditating or just sitting in contemplation with a bench or chair or comfortable mat.

I use the terms “Spiritual Garden”, “Garden Sanctuary” and “Sacred Garden” interchangeably, for they are all so interrelated that it is only useful to differentiate when the term is appropriate to the context in which it is being used.
With that said, a Garden Sanctuary is a space thoughtfully designed to create not only an ambiance of peace and prosperity, but at a transcendent level, where one connects with the Spirit of the Garden, facilitating a connection between Heaven and Earth, the Divine and Human, the Self and Universal Spirit.

Whether a garden has "soul" is not so much contained in the objects contained within the garden, but rather, one's sense of space and appreciation for what they are seeing and feeling. Your ability to "feel" the soul of a place is in direct proportion to what you are allowing yourself to feel. But you must be present, mindful.
There is always soul - or spirit, contained in any garden. How you perceive that soul or spiritual energy, has much to do with your thoughts and feelings at the time.

Designing a garden in any space can be challenging, but the approach to the design depends on what you are starting with, the canvas of your area in which the garden will be built. You may have a completely un-landscaped, brand new home type setting. You may have an existing landscape that needs remodeling. You could also have an acceptable garden but would like to embellish it with the spiritual themes we are discussing.

Zen Gardens is term used to describe a style of Japanese garden that is of the 'Kara-sansui' style or dry landscape form. It is controversial among Japanese Garden purists in that there is no historical reference to actual Zen Gardens in Japanese garden history. The term is used primarily by western cultures referring to an actual style of japanese garden that is comprised mostly of rocks, gravel and is otherwise sparse of plant materials.
